Tool #11: Reflections

1. What are your favorite tools you now have in your personal technology toolbox? Briefly describe a particular activity that you will plan for your students using at least one of these new tools.

My favorite tools that I used was Tool #2 Image Generator. I can several ways these creative concepts can be applied to many lessons in the class room. I also loved photo story, it was so exciting to see the finished product and I'm sure with more practice each one would get better. Maybe a young Steven Spielburg will be born after using all this amazing technology.

2. How have you transfomed your thinking about the learning that will take place in your classroom? I'm not as apprehensive about trying new technology ideas in the class room because of this training. Many tools were not difficult just a little time consuming, but all of these tools can easily be applied to SBISD curriculum.

3. Were there any unexpected outcomes from this program that surprised you? I had many unexpected surprised as I worked my way through this. Instead of dreading the assignments, I got excited to work on them and to see the finished product.

Tool # 11 Digital Citizenship

Digital citizenship can be defined as the norms of behavior with regard to technology use. As we know, most of our students feel comfortable with and use technology daily. As we also know, some of them are not using it appropriately. We have concerns about their safety. We have concerns about responsible and ethical use.

Digital Citizenship is so important as we advance in the use of technology. Teachers as well as parents need to advocate model and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology. As teachers we need to model digital etiquette and responsible social ineraction related to the use of technology and information. Finally, teachers need to continually improve their professional practice, model lifelong learning, and exhibit leadership in their school and professional knowledge of technology.

To teach Digital Citizenship, first and foremost teachers should always model good practices and have students sign contracts of what is acceptable and what is not and make sure they have a good understanding before getting the privelege of using technology.

Tool #10: Exploring Mobile Technology and Appa

I really enjoyed reading and exploring these free educational apps. I borrowed my friends phone and downloaded a math app. I can really see a benefit to using this in the class room. The particular app that I downloaded was simple flashcards. When students finish work early, they can go to certain apps for them to review and practice their facts. Again, students are highly motivated to use itouches so the learning will be enhanced.

Tool #9: Sharing Information Jing & Skype

Jing is another capability to add images, to edit and to share information from the web. It seems like it is a quick way to add visual elements to all th online capabilites. Students could use this with many research projects through out the year.

Skype could be used in the class room to connect with other people, other cultures, and other countries. I know that first grade does the awesome unit where they study differenct parts of the world. They could add a skyping feature and actually visit a class room in another country. The students would get a first hand account of that culture.

I can see the many benefits of these technological capabilites in the class room. As for me, this is all still a major learning curve!!!!!

Tool #6: Wikis

Wikis are pretty amazing. I have heard of wikis in various trainings, but have never explored them. My daughter is consantly asking me random questions. On a recent vaction she asked me how did the Rockefellars get so rich and what is the life expectancy of flys? Next time when I'm asked such profound questions as these I will have her wikipedia them.

I just wikipedia "math" and it said it is the study of pattern. It went on to say such patterns include numbers and thier operations, interrelations, cobinations and abstractions... so on and so on. I feel if students could just see math as a study of patterns they would truly have a better understanding of various concepts. This fundamental definition is probably why I feel Number Lines are so important for students to visualize constantly so that they can see the patterns of numbers and it is always constant.

Tool #5: Tagging and Social bookmarking

I signed up on Diigo.

http://www.firstinmath.com/

Social bookmarking can be extrememly useful in the classroom for students to look up sites that they are studying for research projects. It can also be helpful for teachers to share their sites with each other that worked for them.

Tool #4: Cool Google Tools

Google Reader is a unique tool that could be used to keep up with the latest information on particular topics of study in the classroom. I can see this being used in Science by subscribing to a science site and having students research and write about it. Also students could subscribe to their favorite author and research topics that they are interested in.
Google Documents lends itself to collaboration and discussion of ideas with other students. With Google Documents, students can very easily work together on many documents efficiciently.
I subscribed to 10 different sites and was totally fascinated by them.

Tool #3 Image Generator

I used Spell with Flickr and Wordle
I think these two word generators are pretty basic, but could personalize various activities for students in the classroom. Using Spell with Flickr, students could create titles to journals that they write in across the curriculum. Wordle could be used to think of all the words that are associated with a particular concept that was taught and use them in a wordle. This was really fun to learn about and I will use this next year.

Tool #2: Creating a Professional Learning Community

What are your thoughts about building an online education community and participating in a PLN?2. What point stood out to you from the commenting advice?3. What five blogs did you select for your comments? (you may need to come back and add this information later by editing this post.)

1. Builing an online education community is an exciting learning opportunity for me because as teachers we are recognized as expert leaners and our job is to help others learn, as we model learning through collaboration to solve problems and achieve goals we have in common.

2. The point that stood out to me from the commenting advice was the importance of mdeling for children the right way to disagree on a topic and to show that we can do it while remaing civil and not attacking the other's right to their opinion.

3. I posted comments on Ma-donna, Kathy Lee, Seriously, Geaux Blog, and Renee Mendez

Tool #1- Getting Started

This was fabulous! Thanks to my incredible friend and colleague whom I adore!!!!!!! I think this new adventure will be very exciting to use with students and the campus. This is a huge learning curve for me but I am looking forward to the challenges it poses.
